Numbness or tingling. Burning or electric-shock pain. Weakness or foot drop. Balance problems. Autonomic symptoms in some neuropathies.

How is it assessed?

History and examination help determine whether symptoms fit a peripheral nerve pattern. Blood tests, nerve conduction studies/EMG or other targeted investigations may be used when appropriate.

Treatment principles

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include disease-specific therapy, pain management, rehabilitation, foot care and strategies to reduce falls.

When is urgent?

Rapidly progressive weakness, breathing difficulty, swallowing difficulty or major new functional loss requires urgent assessment.
